I was privileged to join a panel session at Innovation Week 2025 in Port Harcourt, hosted by Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited. The theme, “Ideas to Impact: Reimagining Africa’s Energy Future,” explored how ambition and belief are vital, but must be matched by execution to turn vision into reality.
Renaissance created a platform that bridged conversation and impact, highlighting the need for purpose-driven innovation that goes beyond profit to deliver real progress — from energy security to community well-being.
Across Africa, a shift is underway: a new confidence and maturity in our oil and gas sector, with Nigeria leading the way. Local operators are acquiring assets and managing them with pride and purpose, and Renaissance exemplifies how local insight and global technology can merge to drive transformation where it truly matters.
Yet, innovation doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It thrives where culture gives people the courage to speak, experiment, and sometimes fail. I still struggle with this sometimes, not knowing how a new idea will be received. Humility is just as necessary, reflected in the willingness to listen and promote others’ ideas.
In partnerships, I’ve learned that success depends not only on technical strength but also on how well we bridge the soft gaps — openness, adaptability, and shared values. The best collaborations strengthen both culture and capability.
At SLB, this belief runs deep. Founded by pioneering physicists, we’ve evolved through reinvention. When we rebranded in 2022, we connected strategy, brand, and culture — because how we work determines how far we go.
Culture can enable or stifle innovation. I recall a colleague who built a time-saving macro that automated field reports. It was efficient and forward-thinking, yet it was dismissed over fears it might reduce travel — and with it, travel allowances. The idea was sound, but the soil wasn’t ready. That experience reinforced how innovation is often blocked not by resources, but by culture and fear of change.

Africa’s energy story is entering a new chapter. We are taking charge — unlocking value from our resources and shaping futures that reflect our own vision. The next leap will come from technologies like AI, including Agentic AI. But beyond technology, progress will depend on cultures that empower people to dream, dare, and do.
Let’s continue to lead with purpose, and build cultures that turn ideas into lasting impact.
